Do you know the interesting background when buying interiors and furniture of this era? Is the differentiation to other epochs / illuminations recognizable for everyone?
Art Deco is a style of art and architecture that appeared first just before the First World War in France. The style has influenced everything from buildings, to ocean liners, furniture, jewellery, and even everyday objects such as ornaments, kettles and toasters. The true Art Deco period ended in the 1930's during the great Depression.
Rich materials are combined with modernist styles and fine craftsmanship to create the style. From its outset, it was influenced by the bold geometric forms of cubism and featured rare materials such as ivory and ebony.
The Chrysler Building in New York, the Theatre des Champs Elysees, and the Los Angeles City Hall are all examples of Art Deco architecture. The architecture can be seen all around the world. Bright and often clashing colours, floral designs and high-quality materials are seen in both the building structures and in the furniture and accessories used to fill them. The style was associated with both modernity, and luxurious, high-quality products.
Although the style originated in France, it soon spread worldwide. Its emergence was connected with the rise in decorative artists that used bright, bold colours and clean, decorative lines in combination with exquisite materials. The style moved from Paris to Turin in Italy in the early 1900's before fashion designers picked up on the style with luggage from Louis Vuitton, silverware from Christofle, and jewellery from Cartier making the style popular with fine products and jewellery collectors.
The style is just as popular today as it was in the 1900's. Many cities have preserved their buildings that were built in the style and turned them into convention and cultural centres. Modern variants on the original style saw a resurgence in the 21st century. The style originally went out of fashion during the Second World War, but a renewed interest has seen it make a comeback and become a popular form of furniture and building design again. Decorative art, fashion and jewellery has remained popular in the style, and continues to be a desirable model of design.
